Web Desk: The White House confirmed on Monday that US President Donald Trump will be attending FIFA World Cup final draw in Washington D.C. The draw will take place this Friday.
The United States prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Canada and Mexico. This will mark another major moment before the actual tournament starts. The draw will take place at the Kennedy Center.
Trump views the World Cup as a central feature of his second term and a highlight of next year’s 250th anniversary of US independence according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
The tournament however has not been free of political tension. The US right now has a tense political climate. It was repeatedly suggested by Trump that some World Cup games could be shifted from some US cities. The cities were mostly democratic-run. He argued that illegal migration and crime are increasing in those states and it would be unsafe for World Cup games.
Due to these remarks further debate has been added to one of the most high-profile global sporting event.
As football’s top nations prepare for the global event, the draw is expected to shape early expectations and national morale, with 48 teams competing.
FIFA’s expanded team format will be followed by the draw. The host nations will be featured in Pot 1 which are the United States, Mexico and Canada. Pot 1 will also have the world’s four highest-ranked teams Argentina, Spain, England and France.
According to FIFA’s confederation rules teams will be placed in Pots, 2,3 and 4. The four top teams can only meet in semi-finals as they have been separated.
