Lahore: The Punjab government has taken a major step to tackle illegal mining by approving the creation of a dedicated Mines and Minerals Force. The new initiative, backed by legislation, aims to modernize oversight and ensure transparency in the province’s mineral sector.

Mines and Minerals Bill 2025 Passed by Standing Committee

The Punjab Assembly’s standing committee has approved the Mines and Minerals Bill 2025, paving the way for the establishment of the specialized force. Officials said the legislation introduces strict rules for licensing, supervision, and mining operations, aiming to curb unauthorized extraction and protect resources.

Modern Systems for Transparency and Investment

The government emphasized that the reforms would create a transparent and modern system for the mining sector. Authorities said the new framework will provide a conducive environment for both domestic and foreign investment, boosting economic growth in Punjab.

Key Provisions of the Bill

The Mines and Minerals Bill 2025 introduces several key measures:

  • A dedicated Mines and Minerals Force to enforce regulations and prevent illegal mining.
  • A new cadastre system for exploration, prospecting and mining titles to streamline operations.
  • Authority to cancel inactive or non-compliant mining titles immediately.
  • Exclusion of nuclear energy, oil, and gas reserves from the law, which will be governed separately.

Officials said these provisions are intended to strengthen regulatory oversight and promote responsible resource management across the province.

Government’s Vision for the Mining Sector

Punjab authorities described the move as part of a broader effort to modernize resource management and ensure sustainable development. Officials stressed that a fair, well-regulated mining environment is essential for attracting investment, generating revenue and maintaining environmental safeguards.
