LHC seeks reports on rising stray dog attacks

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Monday sought detailed reports from relevant departments over the increasing incidents of stray dogs biting citizens.

During the hearing of a case concerning the failure to provide vaccines for victims of stray dog attacks, the Additional Medical Superintendent of Mayo Hospital submitted a report.

The report stated that over the past 14 months, the number of patients affected by dog bites has risen, with 1,796 cases reported at Mayo Hospital from September 24, 2024, to date.

Justice Khalid Ishaq expressed concern over the report, stating that while animals have rights, children, the most vulnerable members of society, are being bitten on the streets. He directed the concerned departments to submit their reports.

The petitioner’s lawyer argued that the administration has not taken any action against stray dogs. He noted that children are now afraid to go outside in several areas and urged the court to hold responsible authorities accountable.

The court ordered the Livestock, Local Government, and Health departments to hold a joint meeting and provide a six-point Terms of Reference (TORs). The relevant departments have been instructed to submit their reports in the next hearing.
