Web Desk: Talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan reached a deadlock in Istanbul, as Pakistan reaffirmed its principled stance on counterterrorism responsibilities and regional security, according to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.
Pakistan Thanks Mediators
Federal Minister for information Attaullah Tarar expressed gratitude to Turkiye and Qatar for facilitating the discussions. “We appreciate the efforts of Turkey and Qatar in mediating these talks,” he said, highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to diplomatic engagement.
Accountability on Terrorism
Pakistan maintained that Afghanistan bears responsibility for preventing terrorism emanating from its territory. Tarar emphasized that “Pakistan will continue to hold Afghanistan accountable for cross-border terrorism,” underscoring the country’s focus on national security.
Taliban’s Track Record
The minister criticized the Afghan Taliban for failing to fulfill their international, regional and bilateral commitments under the 2021 Doha Agreement. He said, “So far, the Taliban have not met the promises outlined in the Doha Agreement.”
Commitment to Afghan People
Despite differences, Pakistan reiterated its goodwill toward the Afghan population. Tarar stated, “Pakistan wishes for a peaceful future for the Afghan people and maintains a spirit of goodwill toward them.”
Limits of Support
Pakistan will not endorse Taliban actions that harm Afghan citizens or neighboring countries’ interests. “We will not support any measures by the Taliban that are against the welfare of the Afghan people or regional stability,” Tarar noted.
Protection of Sovereignty
The minister confirmed that Pakistan will continue all necessary measures to safeguard its own people and sovereignty. He stressed that national security remains a top priority in all bilateral and regional engagements.
The deadlock in Istanbul highlights ongoing challenges in Pakistan-Afghanistan relations, particularly regarding counterterrorism and regional stability, even as diplomatic channels remain open.
