Pakistan calls for full implementation of 2011 Abyei Agreement

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has urged Sudan and South Sudan to renew dialogue to peacefully resolve the Abyei dispute, emphasizing that political engagement remains the only sustainable solution.

At the UN Security Council briefing on Abyei (UNISFA), Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the 20 June 2011 Agreement, stressing that Abyei must remain demilitarized and weapons-free. He condemned the continued presence of South Sudanese forces in southern Abyei and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the north, calling both violations that undermine UNISFA’s mandate.

Referring to the Secretary-General’s report, Ambassador Jadoon highlighted 127 security incidents and 34 fatalities during the reporting period and demanded the withdrawal of all unauthorized armed groups, unimpeded UNISFA access, and the return of seized UN property, including eight fuel trucks taken by RSF on 28 February 2025.

He praised UNISFA’s efforts in improving relations between the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya communities, commending Pakistan’s 600 peacekeepers for their professionalism and active role in community dialogue. He urged sustained international funding for the Joint Programme for Abyei to strengthen peacebuilding and resilience.

Expressing concern over unpaid peacekeeping contributions, Ambassador Jadoon noted that while $309.1 million was approved for 2025–26, $138 million remains unpaid, with overall UN arrears nearing $3.9 billion. He called on all Member States to pay contributions in full and on time, underscoring that peacekeeping is a vital UN tool for global security.

Ambassador Jadoon emphasized that UNISFA’s mandate renewal should proceed smoothly, warning that its absence could trigger renewed violence, arms proliferation, and regional instability. He called for deployment of remaining police units and support for the Abyei Police Service, ensuring protection of civilians and rule of law.

Pakistan reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to UNISFA and to promoting peace, security, and stability in Abyei and the Horn of Africa, he said.
