Web Desk: The newly elected mayor of New York expressed gratitude to all the fellow Newyorkers who stood by him, Zohran Mamdani’s wife and parents were also present at the occasion. In a rousing victory speech that electrified supporters and echoed across the five boroughs, newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared that “the working people have taken back their power” and vowed to usher in “a city we can all afford.” Speaking to a jubilant crowd in Queens, Mamdani celebrated what he called the toppling of a “political dynasty” and the birth of “a new kind of politics rooted in justice, equality and belonging.”

A Pledge to Working New Yorkers

Mamdani, 33, promised to deliver sweeping reforms from free and faster public buses to universal childcare and thousands of new teachers. Moreover, he said, “Working people will love and live in this city,” adding that his administration would hold “bad landlords to account” and “end the culture of corruption” that has long favored billionaires. In addition, he took direct aim at former President Donald Trump, saying, “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”

A City Hall for All Communities

The mayor-elect vowed to build an inclusive City Hall that “stands steadfast with New York’s Jewish community against antisemitism” and ensures that “more than one million Muslims belong not only in this city but in its halls of power.” In addition, he framed his victory as a mandate for unity among religious and ethnic minorities, declaring, “This city is your city, and this democracy is your democracy.”

Personal Roots and Family Tribute

In an emotional moment, Mamdani thanked his parents Ugandan-born academic Mahmood Mamdani and acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair for shaping his values and sense of justice. “Mama and Baba, you have made me what I am today,” he said. Turning to his wife, activist Rama Lakshmi, he added, “There is no one I’d rather have by my side than you.”

From Socialist Ideals to City Leadership

A self-described “Muslim and democratic socialist,” Mamdani said his victory defied convention. “I am young, I am Muslim, and I refuse to apologize for any of this,” he declared, drawing cheers. “If tonight teaches us anything, it’s that convention has held us back.” He pledged to govern “in prose that still rhymes,” promising pragmatic policies rooted in poetic ideals.

A Call to Action and Accountability

Mamdani urged New Yorkers to expect results, not rhetoric. Moreover, he declared, “When we enter City Hall in 58 days, expectations will be high. We will meet them.” He added, “No longer will we have to open a history book for proof that Democrats can dare to be great.”. Our greatness will be felt by every tenant, every grandparent, every single mother who feels the city they love finally loves them back.”

Finally, as confetti fell and supporters chanted his name, Mamdani closed with a promise that captured the spirit of his campaign: “Together, New York, we will make buses fast and free. Together, we will deliver universal childcare. Together, we will build a shining city for all.”
