Shreyas Iyer hospitalized in Sydney ICU after rib injury

SYDNEY: India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalized in Sydney and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after suffering internal bleeding caused by a rib cage injury sustained during the third match against Australia.

The incident occurred when Iyer took a stunning running catch from backward point to dismiss Alex Carey but appeared to injure his left rib cage in the process. Soon after returning to the dressing room on Saturday, he experienced discomfort and was rushed to the hospital.

“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. Tests revealed internal bleeding, prompting his immediate admission. He will remain under observation for two to seven days, depending on recovery, as doctors are monitoring the risk of infection due to bleeding,” a source revealed.

The BCCI’s medical team acted promptly after noticing fluctuations in Iyer’s vital signs upon his return to the dressing room. “The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him straight to the hospital. He’s stable now, but it was a close call. He’s a tough player and should recover soon,” the source added.

Initially, Iyer was expected to miss around three weeks of cricket, but his recovery could take longer than anticipated. “Given the internal bleeding, it’s difficult to specify when he’ll return to competitive cricket,” the source said.

The 31-year-old is likely to remain in Sydney for at least a week before being cleared to travel back to India. He is not part of India’s T20 squad.
