Messi’s India Return Postponed as Argentina Cancels Kochi Match

NEW DELHI: Despite extensive preparations, India’s much-anticipated football spectacle has been derailed, exposing the complexities of hosting a FIFA-sanctioned event.

For weeks, Kerala had been brimming with excitement over the expected arrival of Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team. The reigning World Cup champions were set to play a landmark friendly match at Kochi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on November 17, a fixture that would have marked Messi’s first appearance in India in over a decade.

However, the dream has been put on hold. The Argentina Football Association (AFA) has confirmed that the team will now play only in Angola during the upcoming international window, effectively cancelling the Indian leg of their tour. The news has left fans across Kerala heartbroken, especially those who viewed the event as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness their football idol in person.

Anto Augustine, Managing Director of Reporter Broadcasting Company and Emraj Group International, both key organizers of the event, announced the postponement on Facebook. “Considering the delay in receiving FIFA’s permission, after discussions with the Argentine Football Association (AFA), it has been decided to postpone the match from the November window,” he said.

Augustine added that the match would be rescheduled for the next FIFA international window, with a new date to be announced soon. Representatives from AFA had earlier visited Kochi to inspect the stadium and hotels as part of their planning efforts.

Messi last played in India in 2011, when he captained Argentina in a friendly against Venezuela at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium, his debut as national captain.

What opposition says:

The cancellation has also triggered a political row. The opposition Congress party has criticized the Kerala government for prematurely publicizing the event without securing formal confirmation from AFA. The situation underscores the challenges of coordinating international sports events, where communication gaps among organizers, associations, and governing bodies can derail even the most ambitious plans.
