GSP Upgrades Geo-Science Advanced Research Laboratory

ISLAMABAD: The Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP) has upgraded its Geo-Science Advanced Research Laboratory to meet international standards, marking a significant step forward in the country’s mineral research and development sector.

Officials said the upgrade is part of Pakistan’s broader efforts to strengthen the national economy, with the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) playing a vital role in advancing the mining and minerals sector.

The newly modernized laboratory will provide both local and international companies with access to reliable and high-quality mineral analytical data, fostering research collaboration and investment in Pakistan’s mineral potential.

Director General of GSP, Adnan Alam Awan, stated that the upgraded facility is “undoubtedly one of the most advanced research laboratories in line with international benchmarks.”

Director Naghma Haider highlighted that the lab is now capable of conducting all types of certified mineral testing within Pakistan. She emphasized the importance of state-of-the-art equipment such as the Scanning Electron Microscope, which significantly enhances the institution’s research capabilities.

Geologist Dr. Rashid Haider noted that through remote sensing technology, researchers can analyze the Earth’s surface and identify locations rich in valuable minerals. Chemist Andaleeb Azfar explained that the Wet Chemical Analysis Lab converts rock and mineral samples into solutions using modern techniques, while Assistant Director Maria Awan added that the XRD Lab processes data through advanced XRD machines and software containing information on more than 100,000 minerals.

Geologist Naveed Munawar shared that the museum, established in 1991, showcases rocks, minerals, and fossils collected from various regions of Pakistan and abroad.

Officials concluded that sustained research and innovation are key to driving progress in the mineral sector and ensuring long-term economic stability for the country.
