The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) suffered a major political setback when the Election Commission of Pakistan declared all the members of the Tehreek-e-Insaf and Sunni Alliance Council as’ Independent ’in the light of the Supreme Court's decision. This decision has resulted in clear changes in party positions in national and provincial assemblies. Supreme Court decision
This decision is based on a detailed 5-member Constitution Bench decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan of 25 August 2025, which stated that the PTI did not meet the required legal requirements regarding its party status from the Election Commission as a political party. The legal status of the Alliance with the Sunni Unity Council was also challenged in the Supreme Court, which was declared ineffective. ’In light of the decision of the Supreme Court, the status of the members elected to the National Assembly, Punjab Assembly, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and Sindh Assembly from the platform of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf or Sunni Alliance Council is now declared independent,' said the formal declaration issued by the Election Commission. In the Punjab Assembly also, the members elected under the banner of the Sunni Unity Council will now be considered independent. The PTI's complete dominance in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has ended, all members have become independent. In the Sindh Assembly also a few members who were associated with the Sunni Alliance Council or PTI will now sit in an independent position. Political Impact
According to experts, this decision could make a significant difference in future potential legislation, a vote of confidence, or the attainment of a numerical majority for a governing coalition in the House. PTI may face difficulties in playing an effective role in government formation or opposition, as their members are no longer bound by any party discipline. Future Action
There has been no official response from the PTI leadership to this decision yet, however, sources say that the party is considering filing a review petition against this decision. This decision can have a profound impact not only on PTI but also on Pakistan's political landscape, where the legitimacy of parties and adherence to constitutional requirements has become more important than ever.
