Web Desk: Pakistani security forces launched a counteroffensive at the Torkham border crossing after what officials described as unprovoked aggression by Afghan Taliban fighters, security sources said on Thursday.
Security sources said Afghan Taliban fighters initiated the confrontation. In response, Pakistani forces carried out what officials termed a vigilant and precise operation, forcing Taliban fighters to retreat from their positions at Torkham.
According to the sources, the fighters fled the area in trucks loaded with equipment. Pakistani troops subsequently secured the vacated checkpoints and raised the national flag at key posts previously held by Afghan elements.
Under “Operation Ghazab-Lil-Haq” 58 Afghan fighters are killed while more than 100 wounded in what security sources described as precise and effective retaliatory strikes. The operation, which remains ongoing, has destroyed 12 Afghan border posts and resulted in the capture of five others, according to officials.
Moreover, aerial strikes neutralized a major weapons depot, three battalions and a sector headquarters, while more than 30 tanks, artillery guns and armored personnel carriers were destroyed. Security sources said the campaign continues with high precision and significant impact, signaling an intensified military response along the border.
Meanwhile, security officials said the Pakistan Air Force conducted strikes inside Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province. The operation destroyed a large ammunition depot, they said.
In addition, officials claimed that three Afghan battalions and a sector headquarters were completely destroyed during the counterattack. More than 30 tanks, artillery guns and armored personnel carriers were also destroyed, according to the security sources.
Pakistani security officials said the armed forces remain prepared to make any sacrifice in defense of the country’s sovereignty. They added that the military stands ready to deliver an immediate and decisive response to any future border violations or provocations.
The latest escalation underscores the fragile security environment along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, where mistrust and sporadic clashes have strained ties between Islamabad and Kabul in recent years.
