Web Desk: The United States has decided to permanently close its consulate in Peshawar. The move aims to reduce operational expenses.
According to the United States Department of State the decision was finalized this week after an internal review of costs.
The diplomatic office has been operating in Peshawar for many years. At present 18 American diplomats are serving at the consulate.
Reports say the yearly operating cost of the consulate reaches about 2 billion and 24 crore Pakistani rupees.
The Associated Press reported that the closure is part of a wider effort by the United States to reduce expenses related to overseas diplomatic operations.
The decision will end the permanent presence of the US consulate in Peshawar. However the United States will continue diplomatic activities in Pakistan through other missions.
The main American diplomatic mission remains the embassy in Islamabad along with the consulate in Karachi.
Officials have not yet announced the exact timeline for the closure. Further updates are expected as the transition process begins.
