WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has once again warned India over its continued purchase of Russian oil, saying that heavy tariffs will remain in place if New Delhi does not halt its imports.
Trump said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier assured him that India would stop buying Russian oil. “India must make a decision regarding Russian oil, otherwise it will face increased economic pressure,” the U.S. president stated.
Speaking further, Trump noted that while tariffs on China could be reduced, Beijing would have to make certain concessions in return. “We want China to stop playing games with rare minerals,” he said.
The president also mentioned that an additional announcement regarding tariffs on Colombia would be made on Monday.
Just a few days earlier, during a media briefing at the Oval Office, President Trump had said that Prime Minister Modi assured him India would not purchase oil from Russia. Trump added that although he had been unhappy with India’s previous oil dealings with Moscow, the issue appeared to have been resolved at that time.
