Kuala Lumpur: U.S. President Donald Trump Sunday once again praised Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, calling them “great leaders”.
President Trump also acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s role in mediating the brief Pakistan-Afghanistan ceasefire. He made these remarks during the ceremony of signing of peace deal between Thiland and Cambodia.
Thailand and Cambodia have signed a historic peace agreement in Malaysia, witnessed by U.S. President Donald Trump, marking a major diplomatic breakthrough in Southeast Asia.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Trump said he was committed to promoting peace worldwide. “I like stopping wars, not starting them,” Trump stated, adding that his administration had halted eight conflicts so far through trade and diplomacy.
He announced that Malaysia would monitor the implementation of the peace accord between Thailand and Cambodia. “This peace agreement will save hundreds of thousands of lives,” he noted, while extending condolences over the passing of Thailand’s Queen.
Malaysian President Anwar Ibrahim, in his remarks, thanked President Trump for his efforts toward global peace and lauded the U.S. initiative in fostering the Gaza peace agreement.
Earlier, on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump expressed pride in the peace deal, calling it “a tremendous achievement.”
During his visit to Malaysia, Trump will also attend the ASEAN Summit, followed by trips to Japan and South Korea. In Japan, he is scheduled to meet the newly elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and in South Korea, he will take part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum’s leadership summit.
The century-old border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia escalated earlier this year after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a skirmish near the frontier. Both countries imposed trade restrictions and deployed additional troops before agreeing to an unconditional ceasefire in August after U.S. pressure to end hostilities.
