Tirah facts explained: why intelligence operations continue without displacement

⏱ 2 minute read

Web desk: Security agencies continue intelligence based operations across Pakistan to counter militant activity. Law enforcement agencies including police intelligence services and the army carried out more than 75000 operations last year. This averages over 200 actions every day.

These operations have produced results. Security forces killed nearly 2600 militants and facilitators last year. This marks the highest number recorded in a single year. Authorities credit better coordination modern technology and improved tactics for these outcomes.

Intelligence based operations focus on specific targets. They aim to avoid civilian harm and large scale displacement. This method also weakens propaganda used by militant groups and their supporters.

In Tirah similar operations continue due to the presence of armed groups. These groups are linked to violence and illegal activities including drugs. In September local elders held a jirga and contacted military and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa officials. They asked for a solution to remove militants while protecting civilians.

Officials discussed three options. Elders could ask militants to leave. Security forces could continue targeted operations. Residents could also move out voluntarily for a short period. The jirga first chose talks with militants. Elders later said the militants refused and ignored local customs.

After that elders proposed a voluntary temporary move. They aligned it with the usual seasonal migration. Authorities say security forces did not force anyone to leave their homes.

Officials have denied claims of a major military operation in Tirah. They say no extra troops have arrived in the area. Winter weather also makes large operations unlikely. They add that the army has not set up screening points that are typical during evacuations.

Authorities warn that false claims can harm counterterrorism efforts. They say misinformation creates confusion and benefits militant groups.
