Stranger Things season 5 has shattered an all-time streaming record. Volume 1 of season 5 was released on November 26, and it quickly dominated Netflix streaming charts.
Stranger Things received 8.46 billion minutes of viewership during its debut week of November 24-30. This weekly viewing total is the largest by a big margin. This is more than any streaming show by 1 billion minutes. The show already held a record in this category. Season 4 had 7.2 billion minutes of viewership in its first week.
It is important to note that viewing totals are not separated by seasons in Nielsen reports. However, it was confirmed by them that 57 per cent of the 8.46 billion minutes came from season 5, volume 1.
It is also important to understand that several crucial differences exist between the release of volume 1 of season 5 and volume 4. In volume 1 of season 4, 7 episodes were released, and in volume of season 5, 4 episodes were released. The timing of the debut was also different; season 4 debuted at 3 am ET on Friday. Season 5 debuted on 8 pm ET on a Wednesday.
The release time for Stranger Things 5 was more optimal for early viewership. However, it had the disadvantage of three fewer episodes. Due to this, the record becomes even more impressive. Season 5 also did not require a full week for its milestone numbers. Season 4 needed the time of a full week.
The run time for Volume 2 has been released by Netflix.
- Episode 5 “Shock Jock”: 1hr 8min
- Episode 6 “Escape From Camazotz”: 1hr 15min
- Episode 7 “The Bridge”: 1hr 6min
Volume 3 will have a limited release in theatres and is expected to be longer than 2 hours.
