Pakistan plans to lift the share of renewables, including hydropower, to 62 percent of its energy mix by 2035.
Pakistan sets clear clean energy goals that include more renewables by 2035 and a nuclear expansion by 2030 to cut emissions and strengthen resilience
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the United Nations at ‘Climate Summit 2025’ that Pakistan is matching words with action.
He said the government will accelerate hydropower, solar, and other renewable projects to transform the national grid.
In addition, he pledged to raise nuclear capacity to 1,200 megawatts by 2030 to provide steady low carbon power.
These steps aim to curb emissions and reduce costly fuel imports.
As a result, Pakistan expects a more stable energy system that can better withstand climate shocks.
Debt is not a climate plan as the prime minister urges richer nations to support vulnerable countries with fair and sustainable finance while Pakistan advances green transport and tree cover
Shehbaz Sharif warned that more borrowing cannot solve a global emergency.
He urged wealthier countries to provide support that does not burden fragile economies with new liabilities. Meanwhile, Pakistan is pressing ahead at home.
He highlighted a nationwide tree planting drive to protect watersheds and cool cities.
He also said the government plans to run 30 percent of public transport on clean energy, which aligns with efforts to introduce electric buses in major provinces.
Together, these policies aim to clean the air, create new jobs, and lower operating costs for families and businesses.
A frontline nation faces severe losses while contributing little to global emissions and now calls for practical tools to adapt and rebuild
The prime minister reminded delegates that Pakistan already lives with the climate crisis.
He recalled the 2022 floods that caused losses of more than 30 billion dollars and displaced millions.
At the same time, Pakistan’s contribution to global carbon emissions remains negligible.
Therefore, he called for grants, technology transfer, and adaptation finance that deliver real protection on the ground.
In closing, he said the world must pair strong promises with measurable action so communities can rebuild safely and economies can grow without raising climate risk.
