Pakistan asked the United Nations to mobilize more climate finance for countries most at risk, during a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Secretary General António Guterres on 26 September 2025.

Pakistan reaffirms support for multilateralism and praises the United Nations role in global peace and governance

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to a stronger multilateral system with the United Nations at its core.

He appreciated the secretary general’s leadership in promoting peace and stability.

He also welcomed the United Nations effort to give developing countries a stronger voice in global decision making.

Climate finance and disaster response featured prominently as Pakistan seeks support for vulnerable nations

The prime minister thanked the secretary general for recognizing Pakistan’s rescue and relief work during recent floods.

He then called for concerted international action to address climate impacts that hit vulnerable countries hardest.

He urged the mobilisation of additional financing so communities can adapt and rebuild.

In this context, he said climate action must remain a shared global priority, not a burden borne by a few.

Regional priorities and conflict resolution highlighted with calls for Kashmir progress and a ceasefire in Gaza

Turning to regional issues, the prime minister raised Jammu and Kashmir, concerns about the Indus Waters Treaty, and externally sponsored terrorism.

He urged a just and peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute in line with Security Council resolutions.

He also welcomed the secretary general’s efforts to reduce recent tensions between Pakistan and India.

On the Middle East, he reaffirmed support for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, expanded humanitarian access, and a credible path to Palestinian statehood.

Both sides agreed to strengthen the United Nations role in advancing peace and development, while Pakistan pledged to act constructively at the Security Council.
