Meteorological department forecasts severe heatwave in several regions

Pakistan’s Meteorological Department has forecast an intense heatwave across the country from today until May 31. According to the department, maximum temperatures are expected to rise by 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal levels.

Temperatures in Sukkur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Mohenjo-daro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Sibi, Turbat, Dera Ghazi Khan and Multan, including southern Punjab, could reach between 47°C and 50°C. Meanwhile, temperatures in Karachi are expected to remain between 35°C and 38°C.

On Sunday, the country’s highest temperature was recorded in Dadu at 49°C. Shaheed Benazirabad and Mohenjo-daro recorded 48°C, while Jacobabad, Sakrand and Larkana recorded 47°C.

Temperatures also reached 46°C in Sukkur and Nok Kundi, 43°C in Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan, 39°C in Lahore, and 37°C in Islamabad and Peshawar.

Meanwhile, Karachi and Muzaffarabad recorded 35°C, Quetta 33°C, while Gilgit recorded a maximum temperature of 27°C.

Metrological department officials have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak daytime hours and stay hydrated to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. Citizens have been urged to take precautionary measures, especially children, the elderly and outdoor workers, as extreme temperatures continue across several regions of the country.

The prevailing heatwave may also increase pressure on electricity demand and water supplies in several parts of the country as temperatures continue to soar.
