Security source contradicts TTP-Afghan Taliban rift claims, says they are “two sides of the same coin”

Web Desk: Conflicting accounts have emerged over the relationship between the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities, with one account alleging increasing pressure on the terrorist group while another dismisses the reports as unfounded.

The claims come as tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan remain high, particularly over Islamabad’s long-standing demand that Afghan territory not be used to support attacks against Pakistan.

Journalist Sami Yousafzai reported that several TTP leaders and members had either left Afghanistan for Pakistan, come under surveillance by the Afghan Taliban or been detained by authorities in Afghanistan.

According to the account, the reported actions have angered elements within the TTP leadership and contributed to growing friction between the two sides.

Yousafzai’s account, citing a source in Kabul, said discussions were reportedly taking place within the TTP about formally distancing its leadership from the Afghan Taliban and emphasizing that the group does not consider itself subordinate to any other authority while operating in Pakistan.

The source also claimed that a significant number of TTP members had been detained, suggesting that relations between the group’s leadership and Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities had become increasingly strained.

However, the claims have not been independently verified.

A separate assessment sharply disputed the suggestion that the TTP is facing significant pressure from Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities.

The assessment described reports of a crackdown on the TTP as false and argued that the group continues to receive support from the Afghan Taliban administration. It also suggested that some individuals may be promoting a narrative of growing divisions between the two groups.

The conflicting accounts highlight the difficulty of independently assessing the TTP’s current position inside Afghanistan, where information about militant networks and their relations with the Taliban authorities is often difficult to verify.

The TTP has long been a major source of tension between Islamabad and Kabul. Pakistan has repeatedly accused militants based in Afghanistan of carrying out attacks on its territory and has pressed the Afghan Taliban to take action against the group.

Afghan Taliban authorities have denied allowing their territory to be used against other countries and have rejected allegations that they provide institutional support to the TTP.

Nevertheless, the issue remains central to strained relations between the two neighbours.

If the reported friction between the TTP and Afghan Taliban authorities is genuine and expands, it could affect the broader security environment along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

For now, however, the competing accounts offer no independently verified evidence of a decisive break between the two sides.

The coming weeks could indicate whether the reported arrests, surveillance and internal discussions represent temporary pressure on the TTP or signal a deeper shift in its relationship with Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities.
