Saif al-Islam Gaddafi assassinated at his home in Libya

⏱ 2 minute read

Web desk: Saif al‑Islam Gaddafi the son of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi died in Libya at the age of 53. Multiple news agencies and local sources confirmed his death.

The attack occurred at his residence in Zintan. Four armed men entered the home and shot him. Security cameras had been disabled before the incident and Saif tried to resist before they killed him.

Local authorities immediately launched an investigation. So far no group has claimed responsibility for the assassination.

Saif al‑Islam was the second eldest son of Muammar Gaddafi and had once been considered his father’s potential successor. After the 2011 uprising rebels captured him in the desert and imprisoned him. He received a death sentence and faced charges from the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity.

In 2017 the Libyan government released him under a general amnesty. Later he attempted to reenter politics including a bid for the 2021 Libyan presidency. His return made him a prominent figure among pro Gaddafi factions.

After his death his political team called the attack a “treacherous assassination.” They demanded a transparent international investigation. Meanwhile Libya’s Attorney General is actively gathering evidence and questioning witnesses.

Analysts warn that his death could reshape Libya’s political landscape. By removing a key figure from the old regime ongoing political processes may face new challenges. Although Saif held no official government role he remained an influential figure in the country.
