Lahore: The Punjab government has launched a new driving license points system across the province aimed at reducing traffic violations and promoting safer driving, officials said Friday.

The new system deducts 2 to 4 points from a driver’s license for each traffic violation and also imposes fines. Officials said the initiative takes inspiration from modern traffic models in cities like Dubai and encourages careful, responsible driving.

Drivers who accumulate 20 points in one year could face license suspension for two months up to a year, depending on the severity and number of violations. Serious offenses, such as speeding or running red lights, will result in a four-point deduction along with fines.

Structured Fees and Licensing Process

The Punjab government has also set a clear fee structure for obtaining a driving license. A standard one-year car license costs 1,830 Pakistani rupees, including 150 rupees for testing, 1,350 rupees after passing, and 480 rupees for courier services.

Prospective drivers must first obtain a learner license online for 500 rupees. They will then take theoretical and practical exams before receiving a full license. Licenses can be issued for periods ranging from one to five years, with fees adjusted accordingly.

Officials Stress Road Safety

Traffic authorities emphasized that the new points system is not only a measure to enforce fines but also a step toward practical accountability. Officials said the program is expected to reduce accidents on the roads by incentivizing safer driving habits among motorists.
