Web Desk: Punjab plans to introduce satellite-based internet services to expand digital access in underserved areas, a senior provincial official said, as the government steps up efforts to modernize connectivity infrastructure.
Anusha Rahman, senior adviser to the chief minister, announced the initiative while addressing a leadership summit at a private university in Lahore. The event focused on blockchain technology and digital assets, while participants also examined how emerging technologies could shape Pakistan’s digital future.
Rahman said the provincial government is prioritizing high-speed internet access for remote and underserved communities. Consequently, satellite internet is expected to play a key role in connecting villages as well as public institutions, including schools, colleges and hospitals.
She noted that although demand for digital services is growing, many areas still lack reliable connectivity. Therefore, the government is launching a “Connect the Unconnected” mission to bridge the digital divide across the province.
Moreover, Rahman said satellite internet services will initially be introduced in the public sector, with the Punjab Information Technology Department already working on multiple connectivity projects.
In addition, the government aims to equip around 6 million young people with access to modern technology over the next four years, a move officials say could boost digital literacy and economic participation.
The announcement comes as policymakers increasingly turn to alternative technologies to overcome infrastructure gaps, particularly in rural regions where traditional broadband deployment remains limited.
