Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the establishment of a Cybercrime Unit.

During a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, important decisions were taken regarding cybercrime, including formal approval for setting up the Punjab Cybercrime Unit.

According to the briefing, once the unit becomes operational, children who are victims of blackmail or harassment will no longer need to visit police stations or offices to file complaints.

It was further stated that mobile units will go directly to affected minors to register complaints. Victims, especially women, will also be able to lodge complaints through a virtual police station, while their identities will be kept completely confidential.

Additionally, it was decided that new legislation will be introduced to ensure strict punishment for offenders.

Cybercrime cases have seen a sharp rise, particularly on social media platforms where young users are increasingly exposed to risks such as blackmail, fake profiles, and online harassmen

Relevant authorities have noted that many incidents go unreported due to fear, social pressure, or lack of awareness, making dedicated and accessible response systems even more necessary.

It is worth noting that Maryam Nawaz has been taking concrete steps to strengthen governance and public safety across Punjab, including police reforms, digitization of public services, and women protection programs.

These measures are aimed at improving law enforcement efficiency, increasing transparency, and ensuring that vulnerable groups receive timely support and protection.
