Lahore: The Punjab government has officially announced the winter vacations schedule for all educational institutions across the province. According to the notification issued by the provincial education department, schools will remain closed from December 23, 2025, to January 10, 2026. Classes are scheduled to resume on January 13, 2026.

Officials confirmed that the schedule will apply uniformly to all public and private schools to ensure consistency across the province. The decision aims to provide relief to students during the coldest part of the season and as a precautionary measure against worsening smog conditions.

Smog and Health Concerns Drive the Decision

Sources within the education department revealed that the move follows a detailed review of weather forecasts and air quality data. Punjab, particularly Lahore and surrounding districts, continues to experience dense smog, prompting the government to extend protective measures for students.

Earlier, school timings were also revised to reduce exposure to hazardous morning smog. Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh, confirmed that schools in Lahore and across Punjab will not open before 8:45 a.m. until at least January 31, 2026.

Revised Timings Aim to Reduce Traffic Emissions

According to the EPA, the new schedule aims to ease early morning traffic congestion and curb vehicular emissions one of the key contributors to smog. Officials believe the staggered start time will help reduce pollution levels during peak hours and improve air quality, especially for school-going children.

Strict Enforcement and Penalties for Violations

The provincial government has warned that any educational institution found violating the directives will face strict penalties. Authorities could fine schools between Rs1,000 and Rs1 million if they ignore the revised timings or vacation schedule, depending on the severity of the violation.

Uniform Implementation Across the Province

The education department has instructed all school administrations to strictly comply with the winter vacation and revised schedule orders. Authorities have emphasized that coordinated action is essential to protect students’ health and manage air pollution effectively during the winter months.

As smog continues to blanket major urban centers, the Punjab government’s latest move highlights growing concern over environmental health and the need for collective action to ensure cleaner, safer air for the province’s residents.
