Blended-Wing Airliners; The Airplanes of the Future?

Web Desk: The aviation industry may be on the brink of its biggest design shift in decades as startups push forward with plans for blended-wing airliners, a futuristic aircraft shape that merges the wings and fuselage into a single aerodynamic body.

In what could mark the beginning of a new chapter in air travel, Seattle-based Outbound Aerospace successfully flew its small-scale prototype, a V-shaped unmanned aircraft nicknamed Steve, for the first time at the Pendleton UAS Range in eastern Oregon. The 16-second flight was brief but symbolically significant, representing the first real-world validation of the company’s radical concept.

From Prototype to Passenger Jet

Outbound Aerospace’s co-founder and chief technology officer, Jake Armenta, said his team took Steve from initial design to flight within just 12 months a process that typically takes major manufacturers like Boeing or Airbus up to a decade.

“The day we opened our factory to the day the aircraft first flew was exactly nine months,” Armenta said.

Outbound plans to use Steve as a foundation for a future 200- to 250-seat commercial airliner called the Olympic, envisioned for the 2030s. With a wingspan of 52 meters, roughly eight times larger than Steve, the Olympic aims to combine efficiency with capacity.

A Century-Old Idea Finds New Momentum

Although the idea of blending wings and fuselage dates back to the early 20th century, only the military has used it successfully notably in bombers like the B-1B Lancer and the B-21 Raider. Now, mounting pressure to cut aviation emissions and improve efficiency has revived interest in applying the design to passenger planes.

Aviation analyst Bill Sweetman notes that NASA’s research suggests blended-wing aircraft could burn up to 50% less fuel than current models, while offering larger cabin space and lower noise levels.

Turning Concept Into Reality

Outbound’s first prototype has already drawn attention from the U.S. Department of Defense and private customers who see potential in its cargo capacity. The company plans to commercialize Steve as a drone called the Gateway, providing early revenue while advancing toward passenger models.

“We know developing an airliner from scratch is expensive,” said Aaron Boysen, Outbound’s director of business development. “That’s why we’re creating products that generate income now, rather than waiting a decade.”

Outbound has raised roughly $1 million in pre-seed funding, allowing it to employ a small but specialized team.

Rising Competition in the Skies

Outbound is not alone in chasing the blended-wing dream. JetZero, a California-based startup, has attracted major attention after receiving $235 million in funding from the U.S. Air Force and investments from United Airlines and Alaska Airlines. United has even expressed interest in ordering up to 200 of JetZero’s Z4 aircraft, pending successful tests.

JetZero’s demonstrator, Pathfinder I, has already completed critical design reviews, and the company plans to begin full-scale test flights as early as 2027.

Despite JetZero’s head start, Outbound’s leaders remain confident. “JetZero’s publicity helps all of us,” said Boysen. “It brings blended-wing bodies into mainstream discussion.”

The Challenges Ahead

Analysts caution that while the technology is promising, certification, passenger comfort and cost remain formidable hurdles.

“The toughest challenge is integrating a pressurized passenger cabin into the blended structure,” said Sweetman. “It’s much easier to build for military use, but far more complex for civilian aircraft.”

NASA, Boeing, and Airbus have all tested small-scale blended-wing models since the 1980s, including the Boeing/NASA X-48 a remote-controlled plane that completed 120 flights and proved the design’s aerodynamic potential. Outbound’s Steve intentionally mirrors the X-48’s size and shape but was built at a fraction of the cost and timeline.

Redefining the Future of Flight

Outbound’s founders say they want to challenge the dominance of Boeing and Airbus, which they believe have stifled innovation through decades of market control.

“We are questioning the status quo,” said Boysen. “To create something truly new, we must rethink what we build ourselves and what we outsource.”

The company plans to follow Steve with a larger cargo drone, a long-range business jet, and eventually the Olympic airliner.

“There’s incredible aerospace talent in Seattle,” Boysen added. “People are hungry to build something revolutionary and that’s why we’re here.”
