Web Desk: Five months ago, when Mahmood Khan Achakzai was brought forward as the opposition leader, there were hopes that he would steer the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) away from confrontational politics and toward dialogue. However, recent developments suggest that he too has begun following the same path of confrontation.
His long-standing ties with the Sharif family had fueled expectations that he could help bridge political divides. Yet, his speech in the National Assembly and recent parliamentary proceedings have reflected increasing tensions rather than efforts at reconciliation.
During his address to the National Assembly, Achakzai described the current government as “illegitimate” and accused it of weakening democratic institutions. He questioned why the opposition was allegedly being denied its right to hold protests and public rallies.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif rejected the allegations and defended the government’s constitutional and legal status. The exchange grew more heated when the Speaker intervened, warning Achakzai against criticizing national institutions within the House.
Opposition members condemned the Speaker’s remarks, arguing that they amounted to an attempt to suppress dissent in Parliament. Achakzai had originally been tasked with facilitating negotiations between the government and PTI, with one of the most pressing issues being access to medical treatment and personal doctors for PTI founder Imran Khan. However, protests and sit-ins have failed to secure these demands, and frustration within PTI is becoming increasingly visible.
PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan stated that the Prime Minister had twice invited Achakzai for talks and urged him to make a bold decision to achieve the objectives for which he was appointed.
The pressure is not limited to rhetoric. Senior PTI leader Shahid Khattak reportedly warned that if no progress is made, the party could strip both Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas of their positions and authority.
On the other hand, Senator Pervaiz Rashid described Achakzai as a wise and democratic-minded politician capable of resolving complex political disputes.
According to political observers, the core issue may not be Achakzai himself but rather those who appointed him, as they have not granted him the authority many expected him to exercise.
They argue that any relief for PTI leaders is more likely to come through the judicial process rather than political pressure, and that the state will seek to maintain its authority through constitutional means rather than yielding to coercion.
