Power division announces big relief for electricity consumers

⏱ 2 minute read
Electricity bills relief for June

Despite the suspension of LNG supplies and the use of expensive furnace oil, electricity consumers will not face any additional burden in June, according to the Power Division.

A spokesperson for the Power Division announced major relief for electricity consumers, saying that timely and effective measures had prevented any increase in electricity prices for June.

The spokesperson said consumers had been protected from a monthly fuel adjustment burden of Rs5 to Rs6 per unit. Even with LNG shortages and reliance on costly furnace oil for power generation, no extra charges would be passed on to consumers.

According to the statement, consumers were also saved from a potential additional burden of Rs38 billion after the monthly fuel adjustment increase was capped at Rs1.73 per unit.

The Power Division credited the relief to policy continuity, rising electricity demand, and a special package introduced by the government. Additional local gas supplies and increased production from imported coal-based power plants also helped reduce load management.

The spokesperson further said that electricity consumers received refunds worth Rs65 billion during the first quarter. Due to quarterly adjustments, consumers were provided relief of Rs1.93 per unit.

He added that the quarterly adjustment had not only completely offset the impact of the monthly fuel adjustment but had also provided further relief despite challenging circumstances.

The spokesperson said there would be no increase in the reference tariff next month, while consumers might even receive an additional relief of around 20 paisas per unit.
