The government is preparing to introduce a new facility across the country to make the subsidy system for low electricity consumers more transparent and effective. The move aims to improve the distribution of electricity subsidies and ensure that the benefits reach only deserving consumers.

According to private TV reports, consumers using less than 200 electricity units are already benefiting from government subsidies. However, a new verification mechanism is now being introduced to bring greater transparency to the system. Under the new setup, consumers will be able to directly access details of their subsidy.

Reports suggest that after scanning the QR code printed on electricity bills, consumers will be able to view their subsidy data. During the process, a one-time password (OTP) will also be provided for identity verification, after which complete details can be accessed. The purpose of the system is said to be promoting digital transparency and eliminating misinformation or unnecessary complications.

Sources say the government is also considering limiting electricity subsidies in the future so that only specific deserving groups can receive them. These may include families associated with social protection programmes such as Benazir Income Support Programme beneficiaries.

Under the proposed plan, eligible consumers will receive subsidies directly adjusted in their electricity bills, while ineligible consumers will have to pay the full amount. The new mechanism is expected to reduce irregularities in the subsidy system.

It has further been revealed that consumers will also be able to see how much subsidy has been included in their bill and on what criteria the relief was granted. This is expected to increase public confidence and make the system easier to understand.

The main objective of the proposed initiative is to make the subsidy system more effective, transparent and targeted, ensuring the proper use of government resources.
