Web desk: Today, partly cloudy weather with rain, wind and thunderstorms is expected across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Islamabad and Punjab. Additionally in northern and southeastern Sindh, northern and southeastern Balochistan, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan, according to the latest Pakistan regional weather update.
Some areas in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Potohar and Kashmir may also see heavy downpours, according to the Pakistan weather update.
According to a weather warning issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD):
- Torrential rains could trigger flash floods in streams and nullahs of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Potohar region and north-eastern Punjab.
- Landslides and mudslides may block roads in hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir during the forecast period.
- Strong winds, heavy showers and lightning could damage weak structures, including the rooftops of kacha houses, walls, billboards, power lines, vehicles and solar panels.
The public, travellers and tourists have been urged to avoid unnecessary movement in vulnerable areas and stay updated on the latest weather situation.
Meanwhile, floods in a north-western district of Pakistan have already claimed at least 220 lives.
Rescue workers reported pulling another 63 bodies overnight from homes destroyed by flash floods and landslides, with more rain expected in the coming days.
Pakistan weather update: regional forecast
The following is the regional weather update for today, according to PMD.
Balochistan
Hot and humid conditions are expected in most parts of the province. However, rain, wind and thunderstorms may hit places such as Zhob, Musakhel, Loralai, Barkhan, Sibbi, Dera Bugti, Naseerabad, Khuzdar, Awaran, Ormara, Pasni and Lasbella in the evening or night. Heavy rainfall is also possible at isolated spots.
Sindh
Most districts will remain hot, humid and partly cloudy. Chances of rain and thunderstorms exist in Tharparkar, Umarkot, Mithi, Badin, Dadu, Sanghar, Islamkot, Nagarparkar, Mirpurkhas and Karachi during the evening and night.
Punjab
Rain and thunderstorms are expected in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Jhelum, Attock, Chakwal, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Sheikhupura, Hafizabad, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sargodha, Khushab, Mandi Bahauddin, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Multan, Sahiwal, Layyah, Bhakkar, Taunsa, D.G. Khan, Rajanpur and surrounding areas. Heavy downpours are forecast in the Potohar region.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Rain and thunderstorms are likely in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur, Mohmand, Kurram, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Peshawar, Kohat, Karak, Bannu, Hangu and Waziristan. Heavy rainfall may occur in some upper districts.
Islamabad
The capital and surrounding areas are expected to see cloudy skies along with rain and thunderstorms, with the possibility of heavy showers.
Kashmir
Rain, wind and thunderstorms are expected, with chances of heavy downpours in isolated places.
Gilgit-Baltistan
Cloudy conditions with rain and thunderstorms are likely in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The Met Office has urged citizens to stay alert, particularly in low-lying and hilly areas, as heavy rains could bring urban flooding, landslides and disruption to daily life.
