Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to speed up efforts to promote electric vehicles (EVs) across the country. The directive came during a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister to review progress on the adoption of electric mobility.
Officials briefed the meeting that 72 manufacturing certificates have so far been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, while 4 companies have been licensed to produce electric cars. Additionally, 123 applications have been received for the establishment of EV charging stations, reflecting growing interest in the sector.
The meeting was also informed that the government is planning to convert 30% of all vehicles in the country to electric power over the next five years, with policies and incentives being strengthened to achieve this goal.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed authorities to accelerate the implementation of EV-related initiatives and remove any hurdles. He particularly stressed ensuring transparency in subsidies for electric motorcycles aimed at low-income individuals.
He noted that promoting electric vehicles would significantly reduce the burden of fuel imports while also contributing to environmental protection and energy security. The prime minister directed relevant departments to ensure swift execution of a comprehensive strategy to provide affordable and eco-friendly transportation to the public.
