Paddy Pimblett has spoken about becoming a UFC champion since he joined the promotion in 2021. Many dismissed the idea. That changed when the UFC announced an interim lightweight title fight between Pimblett and Justin Gaethje. The bout headlines UFC 324 on 24 January in Las Vegas.
The decision surprised some fans and fighters. Dan Hooker said Pimblett had been “cherry-picked” for the title shot. Pimblett is ranked fifth and has no wins over current top-10 fighters. Still, the UFC sees him as a valuable draw. The promotion is a business. Big names bring big numbers. UFC 324 also marks the start of its new broadcast deal with Paramount+. Pimblett’s popularity helps sell the event.
Pimblett has built a strong following through his personality and activism. He speaks openly about men’s mental health. Fans relate to him. His performances inside the cage also attract attention. He has won all seven of his UFC fights. Five came by stoppage. His win over former title challenger Michael Chandler was his best. Jon Anik declared him part of “the elite” after that victory.
Critics argue his opponents were past their prime. Chandler, Tony Ferguson and Bobby Green were all in their late thirties. Pimblett says people keep shifting the “goalposts” to undermine him.
Many believe Arman Tsarukyan deserved the interim title shot more. He is ranked first at lightweight. He recently beat Hooker and is on a strong win streak. Yet he was overlooked. Tsarukyan expressed his frustration online.
Gaethje was chosen because of his record and thrilling style. He has nine UFC wins, six by knockout. He also pushed for a title fight and hinted at retirement if ignored. His name adds legitimacy to the bout.
If Pimblett wins, he will become Britain’s second interim champion. A unification fight with Ilia Topuria would be huge. It could be one of the biggest bouts in British UFC history.
