Pakistan’s new remote sensing satellite goes live, set to transform planning, disaster response

Web desk: Pakistan’s newly launched remote sensing satellite has become fully operational, marking what officials describe as a major milestone in the country’s space and technology journey.

The satellite was launched last month from China’s Xichang Satellite Launch Centre and has now established a stable connection with ground stations, transmitting high-resolution images back to Earth.

According to the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), the satellite’s advanced imaging features will improve data accuracy and serve multiple sectors.

A key benefit is disaster management, with the ability to provide timely and reliable information during floods, earthquakes and landslides. Experts say this will help authorities issue early warnings and mount quicker responses.

SUPARCO noted in its statement that the satellite will also support “urban planning, infrastructure growth and regional development by monitoring patterns of expansion and construction.” It will play a role in protecting the environment as well, offering critical data on glacier melt, deforestation and climate-related changes.

This is Pakistan’s second remote sensing satellite, following PRSS-1, and it is expected to give a significant boost to the agricultural sector. By generating crop maps, improving water resource management and supporting modern farming techniques, the satellite will contribute to food security and crop protection.

In addition, it is set to assist with major projects such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), particularly in mapping transport networks, identifying geological risks and ensuring efficient use of resources.

Officials say the new technology will not only strengthen decision-making in multiple fields but also promote sustainable social and economic development while enhancing Pakistan’s technological self-reliance.

The activation of the satellite, they added, is another step towards expanding the country’s space capabilities and reducing dependence on external sources.
