Pakistan has reached a major digital milestone. The SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable is now live. This is the third international cable system in a year. Federal IT and Telecom Minister Shaza Fatima confirmed the news. She called it a significant step. It strengthens global connectivity. It also increases national internet capacity.
The system follows the Africa-1 and 2Africa cables. This is a period of fast growth. Pakistan’s subsea infrastructure is expanding rapidly.
Increased Capacity and Speed
Transworld Associates (TWA) is the landing partner for SEA-ME-WE 6. They will add 4 terabits per second (Tbps) initially. This boosts Pakistan’s current 13.2 Tbps bandwidth. It is about a 40 percent increase.
The SEA-ME-WE 6 cable is vast. It stretches 21,700 kilometres. It connects Pakistan to countries from Singapore to France and it is a highly advanced network. Its design capacity is 132 Tbps. This capacity spans 10 fiber pairs. The system will support huge data flows. This is crucial for Pakistan’s digital economy. It will help international business and cloud platforms.
New Data Centre and AI Focus
TWA is also investing onshore. They are building a Tier III certified data centre in Karachi. This facility will connect directly to major subsea systems. These include SMW-6, SMW-5, TW1, and 2Africa.
The new centre is a first for Pakistan. It supports high-density racks. This is ideal for AI workloads. It offers secure and scalable hosting. It will handle critical national and international operations. The data centre is set to open in January 2026.
It will serve businesses across the region and strengthens cloud infrastructure. It also boosts enterprise networks and content delivery. Tier III certification guarantees redundancy. It ensures high availability and fault tolerance. This positions the facility as a key part of Pakistan’s growing, AI-focused digital ecosystem.
