Pakistan, Ethiopia to strengthen defence and aviation ties

Web desk: Pakistan and Ethiopia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the fields of defence and aviation, marking a new step in their growing bilateral partnership.

The decision came during a meeting in Islamabad on Monday between Ethiopia’s Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary, Dr Jemal Beker Abdula, and Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Defence, Khawaja Muhammad Asif.

During the meeting, Dr Jemal Beker Abdula briefed the Defence Minister about the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). He said the project was based on the principles of fair and reasonable use of water resources, aimed at regional integration without causing harm to neighbouring countries.

The Ethiopian envoy also spoke about his country’s growing aviation sector, expressing interest in expanding air connectivity with Pakistan beyond the current Karachi route.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif appreciated Ethiopia’s progress under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed, particularly in areas of economic growth and development. He also lauded Ethiopia’s contributions to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, reaffirming Pakistan’s support for its peacebuilding efforts.

Both sides reiterated their commitment to building a stronger partnership through cooperation in defence, trade, and regional connectivity.
