Islamabad: The federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has approved key amendments to the Pakistan Army Act and related service laws, paving the way for formal protection and recognition of the ranks of Field Marshal, Marshal of the Air Force and Admiral of the Fleet.

Cabinet Endorses Legal Revisions

During the meeting, the cabinet endorsed amendments in line with Article 243 of the Constitution, which defines the command and control of the armed forces. Moreover, the proposed changes will extend to the laws governing all three services the Army, Air Force, and Navy ensuring consistency across the military’s legal framework.

Protecting Honorary Military Titles

The proposed amendments would formally secure the honorary positions of Field Marshal, Marshal of the Air Force and Admiral of the Fleet within the country’s defense legislation. This aims to uphold the prestige of the highest military ranks and clarify their legal standing under Pakistan’s constitutional structure.

Next Steps for Implementation

After the cabinet’s approval, the government will present the amended drafts to Parliament for further debate and final ratification. Once approved, the government will incorporate the changes into the respective service acts to bring them into immediate effect.

Strengthening Civil-Military Coordination

Meanwhile, sources said the move reflects the government’s commitment to reinforcing institutional clarity and maintaining balanced civil-military relations. Officials expect the amendments to streamline command structures and enhance coordination among Pakistan’s armed services.
