ISLAMABAD: The Meteorological Department has predicted rainfall from later this week for upper parts of the country including some parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bringing some relief from the dry and cold weather.

However, unfortunately the weather in Islamabad will remain dry and cold.

The Met Office has predicted rain and snowfall at a few places in Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir on December 5 and 6, along with strong winds.

According to the Met Office, Islamabad and most parts of the country will remain cold and dry today, while the upper hilly regions are expected to face severe cold during the morning and night.

Murree, Galiyat and nearby areas are likely to stay cold and dry. Most districts of Punjab will also see cold and dry weather, while Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala and Gujrat may experience fog and smog. Fog is also expected in Jhelum, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal, Multan, Khanewal, Layyah, Kot Addu, Bahawalpur and surrounding areas.

In Sindh, most districts will remain dry with cold mornings and nights. Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are also expected to see cold and dry conditions.

For Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, the department says the weather will stay very cold with partly cloudy skies.

LAHORE SMOG

The city has recorded a slight improvement in overall air pollution levels, but Lahore still ranks sixth among the world’s most polluted cities.

According to the Environment Department, Lahore’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 193, which falls in the unhealthy category. Pollution levels in several neighbourhoods remain alarming.

In Timber Market, the AQI hit 800, which is considered hazardous. In Federal Colony and Johar Town, the AQI reached 521, while the area around Session Courts recorded an AQI of 492.

Experts say dry weather, vehicle emissions and industrial output continue to drive pollution levels. Citizens have been advised to use masks and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
