Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the establishment of Stroke Management Centers in every district. An in-principle decision has also been made to appoint neurologists and pediatric neurologists at every DHQ hospital.
The Chief Minister directed that in each district, one doctor and one nurse should immediately be given three months of stroke management training.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif also ordered the immediate launch of a telemedicine project for stroke patients.
Doctors at district hospitals will be able to contact specialists and consultants by phone for the immediate treatment of stroke patients.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed the launch of a nurses’ training program for Stroke Management Centers and ordered steps to provide stroke management training to rescue workers as well.
She also instructed that a public awareness campaign be launched for the treatment of stroke.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif said that the importance of “golden hours” in stroke treatment is universally acknowledged, adding that she would personally lead the awareness campaign. Stroke Management Centers will be established in every children’s hospital across Punjab so that no patient has to travel to a major city for treatment.
PIMS neurologist Dr. Qasim Bashir briefed the Chief Minister on the stroke management program, stating that one out of every four people above the age of 25 is at risk of stroke. Awareness and training for pre-hospital, hospital, and post-hospital stroke care are essential.
