US Secretary of State Marco Rubio likely to visit Pakistan in October

WEBDESK: Diplomatic sources have said that United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to visit Pakistan in October.

According to the sources, Pakistan has already begun preparations for the high-level visit. If it goes ahead, this will be Secretary Rubio’s first official trip to Pakistan.

The agenda is likely to include discussions on counter-terrorism, trade, and strengthening bilateral relations.

The last visit by a US Secretary of State was in September 2018, when Mike Pompeo travelled to Islamabad during the Trump administration.

Last month, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a meeting with Secretary Rubio in Washington, DC. The two sides discussed trade, investment, agriculture, and cooperation in other key areas.

The Foreign Office said Dar was warmly received at the State Department, where the talks also covered counter-terrorism and regional peace. It was the first official meeting between the two foreign ministers.

According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, this was the first meeting between the foreign ministers of Pakistan and the United States. They held detailed discussions on bilateral relations and possible cooperation in various sectors.

The meeting also covered strengthening trade and economic ties, investment, agriculture, technology, and minerals, along with other important areas.
