Mamdani’s speech cites Ramiz Raja in speech goes viral

NEW YORK: A campaign speech by New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has taken social media by storm after he quoted former Pakistan cricketer and renowned commentator Ramiz Raja.

Addressing his supporters, Mamdani referred to Raja’s famous line about Pakistan’s cricketing habit of “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.”

“Some who may have watched a Pakistani cricket match at some point in their life,” said Mamdani during his campaign speech. “You will know, in the words of Ramiz Raja, the ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as tempting as it is to tell this story as if we have already won,” Mamdani said with determination to win the election.

“We know in fact that this is just the halfway point. We know that for all of the acclamations, all of the conquering, all of the profiles, we have an entire election still in front of us,” said Mamdani while reminding the audience that they still needed to go out and vote.

Responding to it, the former Pakistani cricketer and commentator Ramiz Raja took to X and congratulated Mamdani, saying, “many congratulations Mr Mamdani And thank you for being a commentary enthusiast !You played with a straight bat and exposed the ones who “were not playing cricket” so proud of you !”.
