Noor Muqaddam court case

The Noor Muqaddam Murder Case hearing in the Supreme Court has been postponed until the first week of June, with the court also issuing important administrative directions due to the lengthy nature of the case.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Hashim Kakar heard the case, during which the judge remarked, “This case is going to take a long time, therefore it will be heard after Eid.”

According to media reports, Justice Hashim Kakar stated during the hearing that the case would be scheduled in the first week of June and that only this case would be heard on that particular day.

The court also directed its staff not to fix any other criminal case on the day the Noor Muqaddam murder case is scheduled, so that proceedings can continue without interruption.

Counsel for accused Zahir Jaffer, Khawaja Haris, appeared before the court. The three-member Supreme Court bench adjourned further proceedings and ordered that the next hearing be fixed in the first week of June.

Noor Mukadam, 27, was found brutally murdered at Jaffer’s residence in Islamabad on July 20, 2021. Jaffer was arrested as the prime suspect in the case and a trial court on Feb 24, 2022 sentenced him to death for murder. The court also found him guilty of rape, handing over 25 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs200,000 on him. Later, the IHC not only upheld death sentence but also converted the life imprisonment for rape into death sentence.

The ferocious murder of Noor Muqaddam, daughter of a former Pakistani diplomat, in Islamabad, sent shockwaves across Pakistan and the globe, sparking extensive outrage and a renewed debate on violence against women.
