The encounter between Pakistan and India should not add fuel to the fire; it should put it out.
Pakistan’s high-stakes clash against India is upon us, and it is more than a cricket match with everything going on between the two nations in the last five months. Considered the most fiercely contested rivalries in cricket, millions of eyes will be glued to the screen to watch this mouthwatering contest.
There is a lot of noise surrounding this match, and the atmosphere is expected to be highly electric. But Pakistan will have to shut out the outside noise before this pressure match if they are to fight against the mighty Indian team.
Most fans will be treating this match as an extension of the May conflict between the two nations. This thing was showcased during the recently held Legends Cup, where Indian legends refused to play against the Pakistani legends. They even forfeited their semi-final clash, giving Pakistan a free pass to the final. But it was decided by the BCCI that they would not follow this practice in the Asia Cup.
So the match is going to take place, and it will probably be an all-out war, with the winner claiming victory over an entire nation. But that shouldn’t be the case. Sports and politics should always be kept separate. Sports are there to bring people together, not pull them apart.
Despite a hostile relationship between the two nations, Pakistani and Indian cricketers have shown it in the past that they can share a warm relationship. It wasn’t long ago that Shaheen was seen gifting a lavish gift basket to their speedster Jasprit Bumrah on becoming a new parent. Or Babar and Rizwan were seen sharing laughs with Virat Kohli on the field.
Perhaps the best gesture of goodwill was Babar’s tweet for Kohli where he said “This too shall pass. Stay strong”. It was heartwarming to see Babar encouraging Kohli who was going through a prolonged slump in form at the time.
Women cricketers haven’t shied away from it either. After their match against Pakistan in the 2022 Women’s World Cup, several Indian women cricketers were seen pampering Bismah Maroof’s daughter and taking pictures with her.
Such wholesome moments show how cricket plays a key role in bringing people close, and let’s hope that it plays its part once again in bringing down the friction between the two nations.
