Islamabad: Unofficial results from the Pakistan Bar Council elections indicate that the Asma Jahangir Group has secured a dominant position in Punjab, winning most of the province’s seats, officials and candidates said on Saturday.
As a result, the vote is closely watched as a barometer of influence within the country’s legal community and often reflects broader political alignments.
Punjab results take shape
According to preliminary counts, results have emerged for 10 of Punjab’s 11 seats on the Pakistan Bar Council. Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the Asma Jahangir Group won eight seats, while the Hamid Khan Group secured the remaining two.
He said the outcome demonstrated strong support for the Asma Jahangir Group among lawyers in Punjab, the country’s most populous province.
Candidates declared elected
Under the unofficial results, Salman Akram Raja and Shafqat Chauhan of the Hamid Khan Group were elected as members of the Pakistan Bar Council.
Meanwhile, the Asma Jahangir Group’s winning candidates include Azam Nazeer Tarar, Ahsan Bhoon, Pir Masood Chishti, Aamir Saeed Raan, Tahir Nasrullah Waraich, Hafizur Rehman Chaudhry, Saqib Akram Gondal and Syed Qalb Hassan.
Final results awaited
Election officials said the results remain provisional and will be formally notified on Dec. 22 after the completion of the verification process.
Until then, any remaining counts or objections will be addressed under the council’s election rules, they added.
Ultimately, the final outcome is expected to shape the balance of power within the Pakistan Bar Council, a key body representing lawyers nationwide.
