Web Desk: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif shared remarks by Chinese analyst Dr Victor Gao reaffirming Beijing’s support for Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and water rights under the Indus River system.
The comments were made at an Indus Waters Treaty seminar held in Islamabad on June 30 and later posted by Asif on social media platform X.
In his remarks, Gao said countries in the region should not question China’s commitment to defending Pakistan’s core national interests. He added that this support covers both Pakistan’s territorial integrity and what he described as the rights of the Pakistani people to the uninterrupted flow of water in the Indus River.
The statement comes amid renewed debate over regional water security and the functioning of the Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan.
Water-sharing arrangements under the Indus system have remained a sensitive issue between the neighbouring countries, with Islamabad frequently raising concerns over upstream developments.
Against this backdrop, Gao’s comments were highlighted by Asif as an affirmation of Pakistan’s diplomatic support from Beijing on strategic and resource-related issues.
Pakistan and China maintain long-standing strategic ties, often describing their relationship as an “all-weather partnership,” with cooperation spanning defence, infrastructure and regional diplomacy.
