Web Desk: The Kashmir Premier League has announced a football tournament in Mirpur featuring teams from several parts of the region, with organisers presenting the event as an opportunity to promote youth engagement, sporting activity and interaction among communities.

The Kashmir Premier League Football Tournament 2026 is scheduled to take place from Oct. 8 to Oct. 10. Teams representing Ladakh, Srinagar, Jammu, Poonch, Mirpur and Muzaffarabad are expected to compete.

The announcement comes amid a wider period of political and civic activity in the region, with organisers emphasising sports and other constructive activities as an alternative avenue for community engagement.

The event was announced during a ceremony and news conference attended by political, social and community figures.

Organisers said the participation of teams from different cities and regions would give young footballers an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities while creating opportunities for interaction among players and spectators from different communities.

They also described the tournament as part of efforts to encourage young people to participate in organised and healthy activities.

Professor Dr. Anwar Khattab, vice chancellor of the Mirpur University of Science and Technology, said sports could contribute to both the physical well-being and personal development of young people.

He highlighted discipline, teamwork, tolerance and leadership as qualities that organised sports can help develop among young participants.

Khattab also said sporting events could provide young people with constructive opportunities while strengthening social connections between communities.

Organisers said the tournament could also generate economic activity in Mirpur as players, officials and spectators travel to the city.

The influx of visitors could benefit hotels, restaurants, transport operators, markets and other local businesses, they said.

Khattab described Mirpur as a city capable of hosting major sporting events and said such gatherings could create broader opportunities beyond the field.

Organisers said sporting competitions involving teams from different areas could help establish relationships that extend into education, culture, social cooperation and commerce.

The tournament is therefore being positioned not only as a football competition but also as an opportunity to encourage youth participation and strengthen ties between communities through sport.

The three-day event is expected to bring together football teams and supporters from across the region in Mirpur.
