KARACHI: Police have detained a woman, allegedly involved in an aerial firing incident on Independence Day during 14 August celebrations in Karachi’s Korangi.
As per details, the incident came in the spotlight after a video went viral on social media. The alleged suspect identified as a former officer of the Police Qaumi Razakar has been arrested and a case is registered against her.
For the unversed, it is important to note here that the Independence Day festivities in Karachi took a grim turn as celebratory gunfire claimed three lives. One of the victims was a young girl. The firing left 84 people wounded, including women and children.
Rescue workers said 8-year-old Marha, a first-grade pupil, was by her window when a stray bullet struck her head.
She died on the spot. The other two victims lost their lives in separate incidents in the Korangi and Lyari’s Agra Taj area.
Hospitals across the city, including Abbasi Shaheed, Civil and Jinnah, received dozens of injured from various neighbourhoods.
Police later confirmed they had arrested 20 suspects during raids in different areas and seized firearms used in the firing.
Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon voiced sorrow over the loss of lives, stressing that “aerial firing is not the purpose of Independence Day celebrations, and it should be avoided.”
He urged the public that celebrating does not mean taking someone’s life.
He said the police had taken legal action, detaining 57 people and confiscating the same number of weapons.
The IG added that criminal cases, including attempted murder charges, had been filed against the suspects and that they would be brought before the courts.
