innovative solutions

Health-oriented projects developed by students from the Pharmacy Department at the University of Karachi have attracted the attention of professionals in the field. In contrast to the rest of the country which has been somewhat sluggish in the adoption of new technology, they have developed cost-effective, practical, and environmentally friendly advancements.

Their innovations use modern scientific technology to address critical gaps in the nation’s health care system.

Neha Shah and Javeria Latif designed one of the most innovative new health projects, the Anti-Depressant Goggles. These goggles offer a unique, non-invasive option to help people cope with depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. They do this by integrating visual, audio, and aromatherapy to provide a multi-sensory experience that encourages relaxation.Users can use the device at home rather than in a spa or clinical setting. They can incorporate it into their daily self-care routine.

Another meaningful contribution is the invention of the Smart Medicine Dispenser by Arisha Ateeq’s team. Smart Medicine Dispensers avoid misuse and overdose of antidepressants and other medications. Pharmacists program the dispenser according to the scheduled medication orders. At the scheduled time, the dispenser unlocks only the prescribed dose and signals with green and red LED lights. Priced at around Rs. 2000, it is useful for the elderly, Alzheimer’s patients, and psychiatric patients. The team intends to pursue an application with Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan.

For sustainable healthcare, Samia and Syeda Sania Fatima designed the CoolPod, which is an eco-friendly, portable insulin and vaccine cooler. Using PCM and Cooling Gel, the CoolPod can maintain cold temperatures for 8 hours which is perfect for diabetic patients and healthcare workers in remote and industrial disaster zones. The designers also made CoolPod reusable and also biodegradable. It provides real-time temperature control and monitoring to ensure patient safety and protect the environment.

These projects have been seen as evidence of talented young scientists emerging from Pakistan. Because of their innovation, accessibility, and sustainability, these projects demonstrate the ability of local technology to positively impact public health while meeting important health challenges. Projects at the University of Karachi have allowed pharmacy students to achieve practical and socially responsible scientific research and have helped set new standards in the field for the country.
