It has been confirmed by the Italian Cricket Federation (Federazione Cricket Italia) have confirmed that their side will be led by Wayne Madsen in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Wayne Madsen will be replacing Joe Burns who will be omitted from the squad for the tournament.
On Tuesday, the governing body released a statement which affirmed that Madsen will be appointed as the captain of the team for the upcoming T20 World Cup in India. He will also be leading the team in the bilateral series against Ireland in January.
This will be Italy’s first appearance in a global cricket tournament. The Italians are yet to submit the list of players for the tournament.
Italy’s governing body stated, “Madsen brings significant international and domestic experience to the position, having already played in T20Is, and remains a central figure within the squad’s leadership group.”
It was also confirmed by the Federation that Joe Burns will not be included in the squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The Federation further added, “The Federation wishes to place on record its sincere thanks to Joe Burns for his service to Italian cricket, both as a player and as captain.”
It is interesting to note that Burns represented Italy at both regional and sub-regional European T20 World Cup Qualifiers in the 2026 cycle. He led the team as a skipper during regional qualifiers. He helped his team to qualify.
