India imposes ban on Eid ul Adha sacrifice

Reports from India claim that restrictions and warnings related to Eid-ul-Adha prayers and animal sacrifice have triggered controversy ahead of the religious festival.

According to Indian media reports, authorities in some states have warned against the slaughter of cows, calves, and camels during Eid-ul-Adha. Critics say such measures have raised concerns among Muslim communities regarding religious freedom and minority rights.

In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reportedly issued strict warnings regarding Eid prayers and sacrificial activities, while Pushkar Singh Dhami also cautioned against religious activities on roads ahead of Eid in Uttarakhand.

According to the Calcutta High Court, cow sacrifice is neither an essential part of Eid-ul-Adha nor a compulsory religious practice in Islam. Reports further stated that after restrictions on sacrificial animals in West Bengal, Hindu traders also staged protests.

Critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling BJP say such developments raise questions over India’s secular image, while supporters argue the measures are linked to local laws and public order concerns.

The proclaimed restrictions have triggered criticism from various political and religious circles, with concerns being raised over religious freedoms and minority rights in India ahead of one of the Muslim community’s most significant religious festivals.
