Gilgit Baltistan elections set for January 24.

President Asif Ali Zardari approved the schedule for the upcoming general election in Gilgit Baltistan, the private media channel reported on Friday.

According to the official notification, the polls in Gilgit Baltistan will be conducted on January 24, 2026.

Following the notification approval, the Chief Election Commissioner, Abid Ali, said that the Election Commission of Gilgit Baltistan will release the updated schedule for the upcoming elections in Gilgit Baltistan.

He also stated that the Election Commission will convene all party conferences to consult political stakeholders.

The GB assembly was dissolved on November 24 after the completion of five years term. After the dissolution, the former judge Yar Muhammad Nasir, GB chief court, took charge of the caretaker chief minister.

Justice (R) Yar Muhammad has been appointed the caretaker Chief Minister (CM) of Gilgit-Baltistan. The notification of Justice (R) Yar Muhammad’s appointment was issued by the Gilgit-Baltistan Council Secretariat.  According to Article 148-A, the Gilgit-Baltistan Council Secretariat appointed Justice (R) Yar Muhammad as the caretaker CM of the province.

The Leader of the Opposition and Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Amir Muqam, held consultations and decided on the appointment of the caretaker chief minister.

Earlier, the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly completed its five-year term, and officials issued a notification announcing its dissolution.

Authorities have notified all ministers, advisers, and coordinators.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Secretariat made the decision through an official letter, acting under Article 56(5) of the Governance Reforms 2019.
